--------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Worried American,
If you're like me, and have been following the mess up in Washington, you are likely pretty mad this year about the way Washington is spending OUR money.
Not only is Congress bailing out the AIGs of the world, but every other failed business that has an influential lobbyist or contributes hundreds of thousands of dollars to politicians' re-election campaigns seems to be doing quite well in the bailout department!
In fact, I cringe every time I see a new press conference on television, because it means a new plan, and that means less money in our pockets.
Earlier this week, President Obama held yet another press conference, and from the sound of things, the ten year deficit total of $9.3 trillion is an inconvenient fact he is prepared to live with. Apparently, this is change we can believe in.
And us taxpayers? Well, we aren't doing so well. We don't have a lobbyist, and when we vote, no one seems to listen to us. Our home values are down. Our banks are in the red (and likely under government control) and our taxes are going up. Oh, the politicians in Washington will promise that your taxes won't be raised, but do they really know?
As a child of the Great Depression, my mother wasn't able to go to college -- but I swear she was smarter than the educated people who are running the country right now.
And if Mom were alive today, she'd probably give our leaders the same scolding she used to give me: "You have a champagne appetite and a Coca-Cola paycheck."
That was her way of saying that, when you want something you can't afford, you have to work hard and save up for it. But if you try to live beyond your means, you'll end up with nothing but big debts and a bad reputation.
Advice like that used to be common sense, of course. And it still is, among the vast majority of "Main Street" Americans who work hard, pay their mortgages, and rely on themselves -- not government -- to provide for their families and their retirement.
But in what I call the "Wall Street-to-Washington Axis of Power," different rules apply. Your bank is failing because you lent billions to unqualified borrowers? No problem: Here's a multi-billion-dollar bailout to cover your losses -- and to pay yourselves obscene bonuses. Your trillion-dollar budget has no room for a new set of big-government entitlements? No problem: We'll just print a few trillion more dollars -- and worry about inflation later.
That may not be the "change" that many Americans voted for last November -- but it's the change we're all getting. And we're stuck with it for at least a few more years.
I woke up the other day and wrote two words down. Freedom and optimism. As our government grows, I worry more each day about both.
When I look at our economic problems I see optimism as the fuel for new, job-creating small businesses starting up in hard hit towns and cities. Not excessive government spending.
When I read about families struggling to make ends meet, I see removing the burden of taxation by enacting the Fair Tax as the best way to give families the freedom to make smart choices not hard choices. Not families dependent on BIG government to pick the winners and losers.

On April 15 I am headed to Columbia, SC for a Fair Tax rally. I hope you will join me. If you live locally, I encourage you to RSVP today using this link.
If you do not live locally, I hope you will mark April 15 on your calendars anyway. I am excited to announce that we will be streaming the event live on our website at www.verticalpoliticsinstitute.com.
Tax reform is one of the most crucial issues facing our economy. Opponents of tax reform, would like us to believe our broken tax code cannot be fixed. "It's too hard" they like to say. Nonsense. It's too hard because there is a crisis of leadership in Washington.
The path to tax reform will be hard but it is possible if Americans stand together. Our rally on April 15 is another important step towards reform. Whether you join me in person or online, you will be a part of growing movement to save our nation. I hope you will join us.
Doors open at 4:30 with the schedule starting at 5:30. Tickets are free.
Physical Address: Township Auditorium, 1703 Taylor Street, Columbia, SC
