The RINO in the OK State Auditor's Race

So, have you done your homework on our Republican Primary candidates yet? I have been looking deep into the past and present of a few. And while the term RINO is often used loosely and with malice, I see a race and a candidate where the stigma of "Republican In Name Only" will be applied correctly, and may even become known as a classic example.

Check out the State Auditor and Inspector's race. Relatively unknown David Haniger of Edmond, OK is running against former Oklahoma GOP State Chairman Gary Jones in the July 27th Republican Primary. Haniger has worked in the State Auditor's office for quite some time. But here's the kicker:

David Haniger switched from Democrat to Republican just 8 months ago. In Oct 2009, to be exact.

The following information came from followthemoney.org:

Here are a few contributions David Haniger has made:

David Haniger gave money to liberal Democrat Drew Edmondson 10 times.
Edmondson is currently running for governor, and makes Brad Henry look like a Conservative.

David Haniger gave money to former State Auditor and Inspector Jeff McMahan 3 times.
McMahan and his wife, Lori, were convicted on three corruption-related felony counts in 2008. (Gary Jones helped the FBI get these convictions, along with Gene Stipe. see http://wwwtmrcom.blogspot.com/2007/03/fbi-smoking-gun-affidavit-revealed-by.html)

Why would any good Republican give money to liberal scum like Edmondson and McMahan, knowing that it will be spent to campaign against our fellow Republican candidates?

Oh yea, ...

If he is elected State Auditor and serves 6 years, his retirement would
go from approximately $30,000 per year to over $107,000 per year. Nice.

I am endorsing Gary Jones for State Auditor and Inspector. You should too!

The really sad thing about this post is that you and David Hanigar would probably be friends. Hanigar was a Republican when he served 7 years in the US Navy during Vietnam. He was a Republican when he worked with William Braum to help build Braum's Ice Cream. When he went to work for the State Auditor's office - 25 years ago - he quickly learned that the route to continued employment was supporting your boss.

With a wife and four kids to support, he made a judgment call and switched parties. Maybe you wouldn't have - maybe I wouldn't have - who knows. But during the time he was employed by Democrats he supported his boss.

Over the last couple years, David, like many Oklahomans, became more politically aware and when he decided to retire he switched back to Republican. When he did, he went all the way. He will be attending "Restoring Honor" in Washington DC on 8/28. Maybe you two can meet.

Some added comment:

I told Hanigar about your blog post and he replied that maybe he was a DINO for twenty-five years; since every high profile crook he audited and testified against was a Democrat.

He also said that some weasel (my description not his) was sneaking around putting copies of your blog on chairs at the meeting in Sand Springs. If the individual who was doing is convinced he is doing the best thing for Oklahoma, then he should grow a little spine and talk to Hanigar face to face.
